A whole heckuva lot has happened since August. I’ve been busy at work, and all of our indicators are up in double digit percentages versus last semester.
I think I’ve finally wrapped my head around why college recruiting is broken and I’ve seen some pretty interesting examples of some new trends that will shape the coming years.
I’ve also been lucky enough to witness some pretty remarkable examples of how my HR brethren have tried to manage some sticky situations in the news (e.g. Microsoft’s CEO foot-in-mouth, Google’s (lack of) diversity numbers, and don’t get me started on the “echo-chamber-to-end-all-echo-chambers” LI’s “Talent Connect”)
As much as I love this busy time of the year, I’m truly excited to see what’s coming for Q1 and Q2 of 2015. That my friends will be where all of this current talk finally gets implemented and results will be expected.
With that allow me to put on the cap and make some bold (or in this case, not so bold) predictions for the end of the year:
- Tim Sackett will finally be named to a list based upon his prolific blog posts. There will be controversy and several “anonymous” HR folks on twitter will say that he doesn’t deserve it. Dr. Matt will write a post on how the method for selection was flawed. Either way, this is an early sign of the apocalypse.
- The “Movember” hype will finally peak this year. With Tincup and Boorman sporting beards for the better half of 2014, they’ll need to find a new way to energize the masses.
- Stelzer will have an unprecedented string of quiet travel days and not know how to cope with the sudden change in people actually being civilized.
- Companies will realize that being named a “Great Place to Work” will be absolutely critical in their upcoming talent acquisition strategy discussions.
- The Huffington Post will finally publish something of value to the HR crowd and it will immediately be reposted by the folks at Business Insider.
- HR Technology will finally become a topic that CEO’s and CFO’s finally realize is critical to their day-to-day operations. CHRO’s and VP’s of HR will get excited about $ to spend, HR Directors and line staff will yawn and still want paper applications.
- The current threat of communicable disease (Ebola) will force firms to realize the importance of sick days and we’ll see more C-level executives getting the flu shot. It will be shared across the companies intranet and no-one will care. Managers will be forced to finally allow line staff to stay home if anyone has something contagious, like the flu.
- We’ll see more stores about how women are paid less, and the importance of pay equality will be a major topic in the upcoming presidential elections.
- The current crop of college students will have more choices, higher salaries, and competition will be fierce to secure “the best and the brightest”.
- The whole HRCI/SHRM controversy will blow over and will then blow up again in Q3 of 2015. Someone at SHRM and HRCI will either get promoted or fired.
- New HR “influencer” bloggers will be crowned by year end. The old “HR Influencers” will get jealous, calling the newbies a bunch of plagiarists. Wash, rinse, repeat.
I think you can see my point…
Enough of sitting on the sidelines, it’s time to get back in the game.
