One of the interesting features about Miami (aside from SoBe, expensive cars, models, and humidity) is the fact that it has some small town tendencies.
Granted, the metro area of Miami has been named the seventh most populous in the US by the Census Bureau in 2009, however, in the business community it seems that everyone is connected to or knows my former colleague Julio.
I was lucky to work with him (I’ve written about him here before) and I can honestly say that the only thing that surprises me is who will eventually ask me if I know him.
Here are some interesting examples of when I was completely taken off guard when I was asked “Hey do you know Julio?” (DYKJ):
My pediatrician, in the middle of an appointment looks up from his notes and asks “DYKJ”
While meeting with a new client, the CEO of the firm looks and says hey “DYKJ”
While catching a cab to and from MIA (with two completely different drivers) Oh, “DYKJ”
In Chicago, meeting with a client with an HQ nowhere near the MIA, Hey “DYKJ”
At the supermarket, the bag boy noticed the credential on my belt and asked “DYKJ”
Munching on Pizza at my favorite restaurant I was asked “DYKJ”
We then share a smile and in some cases brief explanations of how the person who asked me was moved by their interaction with him.
That my friend is an example of some awesome networking. And every time I’m asked my response will never change:
“Of course I do, he’s one of the good guys!”

We need a guest post from Julio so he can share his strategies!
That would be a bit difficult since I don’t think he’s a blogger. I’ll put it on the bucket list though.
